Culture

The culture of Blekinge bears traces of both Swedish and Danish influences, visits from across the Baltic and of returning seamen. Blekinge needlework (Blekingesöm) is a well-know specialty, as are traditional woodworking and the unique black granite (diabase), which is quarried in what we call the quarry workers region (Stenbärarland) in western Blekinge.

Culture has a constant and active presence In Blekinge. This is reflected by especially strong engagement in art, theater, music and literature. Harry Martinsson lived in the Olosftröm area. As did the famed sculptor Eldh. Blekinge’s konstrunda is a popular yearly event when local artists join in exhibiting their work. Teatersmedjan in Karlshamn is unique, as are Brunnsparken in Ronneby and the jazz festival in Hällevik, just to mention a few examples. And all of Karlskrona is a World Heritage site.

Moreover, Blekinge has communities with marketplaces and cultural districts, world-famous architecture, the fascinating Snapphanebygd (home of a large band of outcasts who resisted the authority of the Swedish monarchy in the 1600s), harbors, fishing villages, fortresses, churches and museums of historic cultural value.
